Australia has begun the phased implementation of changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, or NDIS.

Parliament finally passed the legislation on 19 August 2026. It received Royal Assent on 20 August and became the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Act 2026.

Some provisions commenced on 27 August. The reforms affect access to the NDIS, how plans are created and reviewed, how funding is used, how support providers operate, measures addressing fraud, and aspects of pricing.

Other changes will be introduced gradually. Changes to NDIS eligibility are not scheduled to commence until 1 January 2028.

The NDIS states that participants can currently continue using their existing plans and supports as usual. Participants will be informed as future changes directly affect them.
