A section of sidewalk on Tenisty Lane in Brest had significant surface irregularities, height differences and damaged pavement that made safe movement difficult for pedestrians and people with reduced mobility.
Providing a safe and convenient route is particularly important for people using personal mobility devices, as well as parents with strollers and other people who may find high curbs and uneven surfaces difficult to overcome.
A request concerning the condition of the sidewalk was submitted to the municipal services. It called for an inspection of the area, repairs to the damaged surface and smoother transitions between the sidewalk and the roadway.
Following consideration of the request, work was carried out on the affected section. The photographs show smoother transitions and local repairs to the pavement.
Creating an accessible urban environment is not only a matter of meeting regulatory requirements. It is also an important condition for the independent and safe mobility of people with disabilities and other people with reduced mobility.
The Belarusian Public Association for Assistance to People with Disabilities “Invalid i Sreda” will continue to draw attention to the accessibility of urban infrastructure.
